What is IPO GMP?
When an investor pays a higher price than the issue price for IPO shares in the unofficial market, it is called the IPO GMP or Grey Market Premium.
When a company announces its IPO, investors usually start trading shares in the unofficial market.
Formula or Calculation
Let’s assume an IPO is priced at ā¹200 per share. In the grey market, investors are willing to pay ā¹25 more for that share. Meaning, people will assume the IPO might list at a price of ā¹225 per share.
Will it always be accurate? No, it is based on hype, demand, supply, and speculation. Take it as a hint, not a conclusion for your decision.
Why does GMP matter?
A positive IPO grey market premium (GMP) may show strong investor demand and the chances of a higher listing price. A negative GMP may suggest lower investor interest and weaker demand.
However, it does not always predict the correct result, so investors should do their own research. These rates can help people gauge the daily demand for an IPO.
How do market sentiments affect GMP movements?
- Market sentiment plays a very important role in daily GMP changes.
- When investors feel positive about the economy or stock market, they are ready to take risks, which leads GMP higher.
- Global issues or market crashes can quickly let GMP down. Even social media trends, expert opinions, and news headlines can influence sentiment.
- Unofficial market demand can drive GMP high; therefore, understanding sentiment is important, but blindly following it can be risky.
Key Points to consider while tracking GMP
- The Grey Market operates on a supply-and-demand mechanism. Meaning whatever is happening in the grey market is unofficial and not regulated by any authority.
- The IPO grey market is volatile, and IPO GMP can change frequently based on market sentiment, subscription trends, and broader market or geopolitical factors.
- It should be used as a secondary hint for your investment decision. Investors’ first step should be to check the companyās fundamentals and its growth potential.
- If your goal is a short-term investment, then tracking GMP can be beneficial. If your goal is a long-term investment, your focus should be on the companyās fundamentals and not just GMP.

Hi,
Your website is very useful, thanks for taking the effort to keep it upto date. One request there is trend bubble – red, green etc. how does this correlate to listing gains?
It indicates whether the gmp is increased or decreased than the last updated one.
Red – Decreased
Green – Increased
Orange – Moderated
