In July-August 2026, retailers were more focused on the primary market rather than the secondary market. Furthermore, as per the sources, net Sales were ₹5,674 Crore in July-August against Net Purchases of ₹42,774 Crore in the June Quarter.
Investment in the primary market was ₹1,307 Crore in the June Quarter vs. ₹12,618 Crore in July-August.
Sources said, after being net buyers in the stock market during the first quarter of the current financial year, retail investors turned into net sellers in the stock market over the first two months of the second quarter and deployed funds into IPOs.
- Secondary Market Movement: Retail investors made net buying worth ₹42,774 crore in the stock market during the June quarter, which shifted to net selling worth ₹5,674 crore across July and August.
- Primary Market Shift: In contrast, retail investors invested ₹1,307 crore in the primary market during the June quarter, an amount that surged to ₹12,618 crore in just the first two months of the second quarter.Â
- Five-Month Totals: In the first five months of the current financial year, retail investors invested a net of ₹37,070 crore in the secondary market and ₹13,925 crore in the primary market, bringing total net investment across both markets to ₹50,955 crore.
- Prior Year Comparison: In FY 2025–26, retail investors recorded net selling of ₹5,803 crore in the secondary market while investing ₹42,608 crore in the primary market.
Market experts attribute this shift to the sharp rally in mid-cap and small-cap stocks starting in April, which prompted retail investors to lock in profits.
Further, expanding listing gains across several IPOs redirected investor interest toward the primary market.
